M This means that no individual soul is perfect, but it also means that some souls are nearer to perfection than others in that they may possess more or less of the nature of Form, some in second and some in third degree. It is this which determines their superior or inferior potential. Plato tells us that the souls are then allotted to stars and, mounted on their stars as if on chariots, they are shown the nature of the universe and told the laws of destiny. To ensure 'fair treatment', he says the first incarnation will be the same for all.
The Forms are unchanging, absolute, and they constitute what anything is in essence or reality. The implication is that there is a Form of soul just as there is a Form of Good, Justice, Truth and of more tangible things in the physical world. The Creator has implanted something of what constitutes Form in the universal soul, just as he has implanted intellect in soul and soul in body. Plato then moves on from the universal soul to the individual soul which he tells us is created in the same way but with 'further dilutions'.
The body, after all, in male or female form, has been created second and, we are told, is of lesser importance than soul. But this explanation will not do. It does not tell us why it is essential for the best souls to be placed in the first instance in a male receptacle, albeit one which does not initially function biologically. To find an explanation of this we have to return to Plato's notion of Forms. The Form, the absolute standard of reality, is what anything is in a state of perfection. Examples of any entity are mere copies.
