There are three simple types of inflorescence that occur among the grasses: spikes, racemes, and panicles (Figure 2-6). Most inflorescences have a readily apparent main axis, called a rachis. A simple spike is an inflorescence having individual spikelets without stalks, attached directly to the rachis.

Although the flowers of large blue fescue, Festuca amethystina 'Superba', are not especially colorful, the flower stalks turn a deep amethyst in early June.  Three photos illustrate the transformation of Miscanthus from initial flowering through final seed dispersal and senescence.  The flowers of some Miscanthus cultivars are reddish when first opening.  sinensis 'Malepartus' after the flowers have dried to a peak of snowy translucency and the seeds are maturing. Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus' in late February, after all the seeds have been dispersed and winter storms have reduced the inflorescence to a stunning filigree.
