That was the usual way in which the personal integrity of a prominent leader was undermined before he was expelled and politically destroyed.  The Party did not continue that tour.  But too often they were not.  The most frequently recurring case was that of Leon Glaser.  The only legal case the government had against him was as a foreign­born member of the Communist party, not for any actions that could be classed as violations of law.  Elevating blacks to top Party positions did not cure that problem.

I couldn't back out after making that commitment.  I found it to be a full time job to read and try to understand those many publications.  They believed right and justice belonged on their side, protesting against imperialist war, supporting the shingle weavers' picket line, marching for unemployment insurance, saving the Scottsboro boys, organizing industrial red trade unions, and fervently defending the Soviet Union against threatened imperialist war.  That style of living proved to be best for me.
