In 1992, she decided to become the guardian of Jene McCovey, whom she took in as a baby: I was getting old. It was time to retire. I turned around and got another one. â•›. I started all over again [laughs]. As a mother, Josephine emphasized the importance of education and good employment. She delighted in each child’s graduation and reveled in each professional accomplishment.

In his autobiography, Wistar described his eventual voyage from San Francisco to Trinidad, California, about 15 miles north of Arcata, to become a packer, ferrying supplies by burro, and later mules, to mining camps along the Klamath River. He first met Francis when the two men teamed up to kill a grizzly bear that had been depredating a store south of Trinidad (Wistar 1914: 42, 175–187). In subsequent weeks, the two men traveled and camped together, at one point confronting, at gunpoint, some non-Indians about to execute three Indians who were falsely accused of killing cattle near Trinidad.
